Solid fuel

SOLID FUEL

Solid fuel contain combustible organic materials and an incombustible or mineral part which is also knkown as ballast.

while the organic part of the fuel consist of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, sulphur. the ratio of the various compounds present in the fuel determines the propertf of the fuel.

The incombustible part of fuel consist of carbonates, sillicates, phosphates, sulphates and sulphides of Fe, Ca, Mg, Al, K, Na etc. and these incombustible part of fuel forms the residue when it is burnt.

the ash part of the solid fuel residue in the pyrolysis. mainly sulphur is an important impurity present in fuel which afects the quality of the fuel.

The heat of combustion of a fuel is the amount of heat which is libeerated by burning unit weight volume of the fuel and describe the properties of a fuel as asource of energy.

WOOD :-
Wood is cheaf fuel that is available in large amount also it is is used from a anicient time till now it is used in villages as a fuel.

besides it consists of cellulose, lignin, resins, inorganic material and as much as 60% water. water content of wood varies from 25-60%, depends upon dry or freshly cut condition. the composition of dry wood is C=50%, O=35%, N=7%, H=6%, and ash=2%.

the calorific value of dried wood is between 4000 BTU to 6480 BTU per pound.

DISADVANTAGES OF WOOD ARE :-
  • it contains high amount of moisyure
  • on air drying the moisture present in the wood comes down about 15% and also decreases it’s calerofic value.
  • when wood is burnt, then the water present in the wood get’s converted into steam so tha the evaporation procss absorbes much heat from the fuel giving a low calerofic value.
  • the ash being very light accompany the fuel gas generated from wood.

COAL :-

Again it is a traditional form of energy which is used for the production of electricity in many countries. It is the type of combustible substance which is formed by the ginte trees plants and other wooden material by the action of high pressure and extreme temperature inside the earth crust.

While trees or wooden materials get converted into coal it takes a lot of time to get converted in coal. By the long time the oxygen and hydrogen content of the decade trees get decreased but the amount of carbon content in the coal increases.

It is one of most important fuels present on the earth; many of the industries are dependent over the supply of coal for the different purposes.

Coal mainly contains carbons, hydrocarbons, non combustible materials as an impurity but also contains a certain amount of oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur.

It also gives many useful products at the time of carbonization such as gas, oil, naphthalene and other important chemical products.

uses of coal :-

The very first use of coal is that it is used for the combustion material for the production of thermal energy which is used by the various industries for the production of power also it is used to produce steam in the thermal power plants.

Another use of coal is that it is used for the production of coke which is produced by the burning of coal in absence of heat. definitely it is a minor industry but still it holds its own importance.

The conversion of coal uses various chemical processes to get converted into gaseous or liquid fuel which is also known as synthetic fuel. Also it is a traditional kind of fuel which is used by the people over the year so it has many other important uses.
besides these the reason of using coal as a fuel is due to some of its favourable reasons like as it is easy to mining coal instead of other fuels, it is easy to handle means the combustion is controllable, less hazardous than liquid and gaseous fuel, on heating in the absence of air yields metallurgical coke suitable for blast furnace, it also produces many useful substance on carbonisation.

I hope the above mentioned information helps for understanding about the solid fuels.

That's all for today thankyou and have a amazing day
